What is Art?

Art, a visual object or experience consciously created through an expression of skill or imagination. The term art encompasses diverse media such as paintingsculptureprintmakingdrawingdecorative artsphotography, and installation.

Art can be anything you want it to be. How can there be rules for something that doesn't really have rules? They're more like guidelines or suggestions. You can have an overall understanding what art is, but art is really what you make it.

Take this image of this elephant for instance. It very well could be a painting, digital art, or AI generated. In this day and age of technology, the definition and quality of art is forever changing. Some of the best art, in my opinion, is made with your hands. Paintings, drawings, sculpture, ceramics, photography, writing, music, etc. Any person who performs any of these tasks or talents are considered artists.

I absolutely love creating things. I am considered an artist by many forms. I crochet, draw, paint, papercraft (cards, scrapbooking, create junk journals, bind books), I also write, and sew. All of these things are considered art to me. They might not be considered art by the next person, who may not be into any of those things, but creating things with my hands will always be something I will do. I might alternate crafts and hobbies over the years, but they will always be considered art to me.

So, take some time to evaluate what art means to you. Is art anything or everything listed above? Or is it something more? I think classic art will forever be art, but there is so much more to uncover in the art world. So many mediums, instruments, and tools to collect and use to your advantage.

I challenge you to take some time to create something. It can be anything listed or something completely different. What I consider art might be different from what you consider art.

Happy creating!
